5 out of 5 stars great toy, but forget the picture boards   November 28, 2004

I bought this toy because my children loved to play with pattern blocks at science and art museums. This was the only toy I found with real wood blocks that were the size and feel of the toys they had played with earlier. Using the blocks alone, my children loved to create an endless number of beautiful geometric patterns. The toy encourages creativity and promotes mathematical thinking.

My daughter, who was five or six at the time, tried using the picture boards. At her age, she was able to do it although it was frustrating when the pieces moved out of place. For awhile, she thought that she had to use the picture boards in order to play with the toy properly. Once she got over that, we had a wonderful toy again.

If you throw away the picture boards from the beginning and let your child's creativity take over, you have a 5 star toy that even older children and adults enjoy tinkering with.

5 out of 5 stars Hours of Creative Fun!   March 30, 2006

My three-year-old and I have had so much fun with the pattern blocks. He can put them in place on the boards, but it's even more fun to use them in other creative ways. We also have two nice sets of building blocks that we use to make "castles." We use the pattern blocks for decorations, parquet floors, sidewalks, etc., in and around our elaborate castles. I probably wouldn't recommend "throwing away" the boards that come with the set--but I WOULD recommend using them in other ways, too. Great fun!

5 out of 5 stars Unguided, creative play   January 2, 2008

My four-year-old son did each of the printed boards once and since then we haven't bothered much with them. It's more fun to play with the tiles by themselves.

And believe it or not, it *is* fun, for all of us. The four-year-old boy makes pictures. The mommy makes groovy geometric patterns. The math nerd dad (that's me) makes dodecagons. I'm especially happy that there are enough pieces for the whole family to play at once.

Pure unguided, creative play. That's where the magic happens, folks.

The pieces do tend to scatter. We don't care.

5 out of 5 stars hours of fun ...lots of little pieces   September 29, 2006

My sister-in-law bought this for my sons 3rd birthday, he loves it and plays with it for hours. Within a week he knew all his shapes, and then we started working on left and right. I would say "turn that piece to the right and it will fit better." Within a few weeks he knew his right from left.

The only down side is LOTS of little pieces. I also have a 5 month old who loves to put things in her mouth. I had to make the rule "only at the kitchen table and it must be put away when you're done" I explained how dangerous it is for his baby sister... now he puts all his puzzles away. Because he wants to be a good big brother. Huge bonus!

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic toy for todays children!   July 31, 2007

I used this toy when I was a child over 23 years ago and now my 5 y/o nephew is playing with it.

This toy is great at building patience, eye-hand coordination, shape recognition and imaginative learning.

Whereas some children may feel the pieces "slide around" too much a simple fix would be to attach some felt of suede-cloth to the back of each piece with some non-toxic adhesive.

If you are like me and chose not to adapt the toy then your child will learn patience and anger management while playing with the toy.
